Mets fire Willie Randolph

A day that has long been coming, is finally upon us. Willie Randolph has been fired as the head coach of the New York Mets.

Among the other firings, Rick Peterson and Tom Nieto were also fired.

Jerry Manuel has been named the interim head coach. Also, Ken Oberkfell, Luis Aguayo and Dan Warthen have been added to the coaching staff.

Obkerfell was the New Orleans manager, Aguayo was the Mets field coordinator, and Warthen was the AAA pitching coach.

I'm half-relieved the tip-toeing and dance is over. The rest of me is now worried for the future and uncertainty that lies ahead.

  1. I understand Rick Peterson but why Tom Nieto?

  2. I agree, Willie had to go.
Team is lifeless, sloppy, unfocussed, underachieving.
It probably will not turn the team around, but
management probably felt something had to be done to shake up the environment.
But, to fire Willie at midnight is so not class.
Bad p.r. move by the Wilpons and Omar -- for a team
that needs all the good p.r. it can get.

  3. No idea on Nieto. Makes no sense. HoJo is a lucky man.

Honestly, did you expect different? Teams don't want this bad PR. From a PR standpoint, I think it was sorta clever by the team. Obviously people saw right through it, but that's because the whole ordeal was handled poorly.

  4. well nieto got fired because he was willies boy. They shoulda fired Omar for lack of common sense alou barely played last year u really think he was gonna be a everyday player. Maybe if the whole team didnt speak spanish we'd have some captains nd what everyteam needs a "leader".

  5. Should Willie have been fired?
    Yes.
Should the Wilpons and Omar have done the deed
    with more respect and dignity?
    You betcha.
There are ways to let people go, and it's not
after traveling across the country, after a win, in the middle of the night.
Willie deserved to be fired, but he deserved a more
    dignified ending to his tenure.

  6. Willie should not have been fired. This wasn't his fault. It's the fault of the team players, who have talent, but don't seem to have grown the balls to actually play some baseball.

The media used Willie as a scapegoat. From a PR standpoint, this had to be done.

    But it still wasn't right.
