Just a thought: Pagan to first?

Sure, Carlos Delgado added two RBI's tonight. Sure, Angel Pagan has never played a game at first base. Sure, it's late and this is a most likely misguided thought in a giddy, Pagan-loving, Mets fans head.

But.

What about Pagan at first?

After the spring training athletic contest amongst the player, and Pagan coming out on top in nearly every single event, we know he's a very athletic guy. He's still pretty young, and flashes a good glove in the outfield. Why not give him some reps at first, just to see what he's got?

Delgado is obviously not the player he was two years ago. Ravaged by nagging injuries, he just can't swing the same. He needs to start going with pitches and taking the the other way, but he seems unwilling to do that.

Pagan is athletic, young, and most importantly, hungry. Friday night's hustle double on a bloop to shallow right is just another notch for Pagan. When Moises Alou comes back, Pagan is the odd man out. If he wants to get as much playing time in as possible, he'll try to work as many positions as possible, right?

Put him at first a few hours before a game, and start knocking some ground balls to him. See what happens. He's 6-foot-2-inches tall, so he should have a decent reach at the bag. If we're talking moving David Wright to first, why not Pagan?

  1. You know you are absolutely right, why don't we give Angel Pagan shot at first base. It will be a fun thing to watch, when getting ground balls. Besides, Carlos Delgado doesn't have so much power left in the tank. So why don't you think Willie still does not give a shot and put Angel Pagan in first and Carlos Delgado in the bullpen.

  2. Angel Pagan is what I call a Super Sub. He is not an every day player, yet. He still needs to work on his skills in the outfield and is pitch selection, as shown the other night with 3 K's. He is a perfect fit in the two hole or 5-6 hole. He gets on base, has good speed and is smart on the base paths. As for first base? We need a power bat there. Delgado is nearing the end of his career and cant seem to keep healthy. Maybe we use Pagan as bait to draw in a pwer bat or some relief help?

  3. Hey what about Mike Carp, he is off to a hot start. He is hitting .444 AVG with Binghamton.

  4. Good idea Ramble. IDK if i feel safe letting this guy go though. He might just be on a hot streak, but he seems more effective (I can't believe I'm going to type this) Endy Chavez.

The only relief pitching that's worrying me is Heilman and Wise is coming back in a few weeks. We actually have a surplus of relief pitching, for once.

  5. As far as Delgado not being the same player as he was two years ago, I'll give you that, but saying he is unwilling to hit opposite field anymore is wrong. He's hit opposite field plenty of times this season and even last night had a sac-fly to the opposite field.

When Alou returns, give him two weeks to see how he can hit. During the two weeks, platoon Church and Pagan in right field, and if Alou struggles badly, put Pagan back at left. Delgado needs to stay in the lineup.

  6. we cant rely on alou. simple enough. when does endy get back? i have no problem with pagan at first, but its pointless since he will remain in the outfield. clark?

  8. cant rely on alou? He came back last year and had a 30 game streak. His swing is so great.

  9. But he gets injured WAY too much.

    That's what he means.
