Link: How to use Twitter if you’re a Mets fan

Head over to MetsGrrl.com to take a long, extensive and wonderful look at a guide to Twitter for Mets fans or MLB fans in general.

These are guidelines I wish we all could adhere to.  Yes, I might commit some of the sins that Caryn outlines, but hey, not everyone’s perfect.

Follow MetsGrrl on Twitter.

Oh, and me too.

Twitter Poll: What are your thoughts on Omar’s off-season?

It’s Saturday, I’m still laying in bed and I’m tired.

That, of course, has me thinking about the Mets.  So far, Omar Minaya has added one big bat and a few fringe players / pitchers.  So how do you think he’s done this off-season?

I asked my Twitter followers and here are some responses…

SheckyXero: Omar sucks, he could’ve done more, instead we lack a good catcher, a good first baseman and loads of pitching.

beerman59452000: BAD Jason bay was good, we got no pitching he signed washed up catchers and the mets got holes in there line up.

MetsGuide: ok. It can be salvaged if he acquires a #2 and a catcher.

bosco86: 2 many "ifs". Has not done enough support the core. No #2 starter no catcher bad move at 1st and pen full of "ifs".

willDavidian: Hudson/Lopez and Smoltz or an unlikely trade are his only opportunities to salvage it. Otherwise, it's been awful.

metsfan6986: I feel mixed. He didn't do as good as he couldve but I think Jeff has his hands tied. He's been more aggressive in the past.

MVPGotham: After his comments in October along with Jeff Wilpon, the team has not done enough.

darknova306: This offseason will be a failure until our rotation is fixed. I see only a very slim chance of that happening.

What are your thoughts on Minaya’s off-season so far?  Has he done enough?  Or is there a lot more work to do?

Twitter responds to Matthews Jr. to Mets

People are simply piling on this GMJ to the Mets trade.  Here are my four favorite tweets this morning.

OGTedBerg: Just watch the Mets try to start Gary Matthews Jr. over Pagan next year. Just watch that. That's so going to happen.

mattcasey9: Anytime you can get a guy whose last 3 years of OPS are .742, .675, .697, and UZRs of -12.3, -9.3, -14.5 ... you HAVE to make that deal

MetsMerized: Gary Matthews Jr. misjudges flyballs, is terrible on basepaths, and dont run out grounders. Should fit right in.

dances_w_vowels: Gary Matthews, Omar? Really? Subtraction by addition, I think.

You can’t make this stuff up.  Well, they just did.

Twitter Poll: Which free-agent starters would you like to see on the Mets?

With the starting pitchers flying off the shelves, the Mets are now left with a few injury-prone players and some that just aren’t very good.

I asked my Twitter followers which starter they would like to see on the Mets come 2010.  Here are some responses…

dtmfr: Ben Sheets, because he's got the highest reward (provided he stays healthy)

TheRealHoov: Jon Garland....he may not be glossy, but he's consistent and an innings eater

thesolomind: Wang

NYSportzNut: Sheets hands down - only starter available that has the upside to make the Mets a playoff contender.

Do you agree with these selections?  Who would you sign if you were GM?

Bad news coming for the Mets?

Update – 9:36 p.m.: Oh...boy...

Update – 9:33 p.m.: Steve Popper confirms there is news coming tonight and it is “bad.”

Brian Costa says it is not an injury to Jose Reyes or Johan Santana. That still leaves Carlos Beltran, though.

Original post:

Uh-oh.Jose Reyes? Carlos Beltran? Something non-player related?
What do you think?

The fake Mets [Twitter]

Not all are funny, but they are all fake.   twitter_bird

On Twitter, there is a collection of “fake” accounts ranging from the Mets front office to the owners and manager.

Here’s a list of all them, with one of their better tweets so you know what to expect…

@FakeFredWilpon

The Royals have signed Vance Wilson. The rich are getting richer. If I had known he was still playing we would have been in on the bidding.

@JeffWilponNYM

Don't tell him: We've promised Orlando Hudson if he signed w/ Mets we'd get a river named after him.

@FauxmarMinaya

Overheard kids on train last nite talking about going to see the ball drop. Told them I appreciated their support but to check back in April

@FakeOmarMinaya_

My real plan is to bring players into the organization that are injury prone and old. I just want to test the new medical team.

@NotJerryManuel

I got a bad feeling Leno replaces Conan, Conan replaces Fallon, Fallon replaces Daly and Carson Daly replaces me.

@FakeJayHorwitz

More 2010 Mets slogan options: "Not 2009!" "Citi Field: Still sorta new" "Shake Shack is yummy" Thoughts?

@MetsOfficials

Bay passed his physical! Turns out he only has two concussions and a torn ACL. That's like a paper cut around here.

Fans react to Jason Bay signing

Here are some fans reactions on the Jason Bay deal going official…

AndrewLiv: Love it, they needed a power bat, and got the player they wanted for their price.

Jbones72: if they can swing a deal for a good pitcher i'll love it!30in30 Pirates

alansmodic: From a Pirates fan. I think Mets overpaid. After a year and a half, maybe sooner, they'll be wishing he was gone.

GermanMetsFan: hmm like the upgrade of the offense and that something got done finally, not sure if i like the 5yrs

DWrightGuy5: JayBay's signing shows Omar is actually good at playing chicken. Bengie ran scared to his mommy since he's losing his battle.

cutiepie0319k: i like the signing of jason bay. i know it's not going to fix their problems but they are finally making moves.

mtmcq: They needed a bat, and they went out and got a bat. They also didn't break the bank by signing Holliday. I like it.

michealnichols: Good deal for the first two years. My concern lies in years 3, 4 & 5 where I think holliday will be better.

kerelcoop: good signing but ultimately he won't be the difference maker in the success of this team. They still need pitching.

DonCheech: I am happy with it. Got a legitimate middle of the order bat

DanPirozzi: i'm not a huge fan of it, but it's better to do this than nothing at all which is what it seemed like

Twitter Poll: Should the Mets take a chance on Chapman?

With the waiting game for Jason Bay in full swing, I took to Twitter to ask about another possible free agent option.

Aroldis Chapman, the 21-year-old Cuban defector, threw for teams a few days ago.  According to reports, the Mets were in attendance.Chance on Chapman?

So, as a fan, would you want to see the Mets take a chance and sign Chapman?  Here are some responses…

YES

NYSportzNut: No brainer as far as I am concerned.

MattRobbie: It would be a huge boost to our minors to help us build for the future.

chrisbirckhead: Yes 1,000 times yes. Easily the best talent left on the market.

Chuipi: Of course, only 21, lefty and a power arm.

DonCheech: YES

samtpage: YEA.

NO

blizzake: Not really, I think whatever team he goes to they are going to be way overpaying.

MrMustSeeTV: I'd rather have the Mets invest in Chapman than Piniero, Marquis or Garland. Chapman + Mejia would make a nice combo.

ON THE FENCE

nmigliore: Only at the right price... $20M max.

EliFromBrooklyn: If Chapman doesn't lick his hand, talk to himself and/or crave Mexican food at 2:00 am - sign him to a sensible contract.

CaughtLookin: As long as it doesn't curb other spending, I'd do it.

TheHappyRecap: I doubt they take a chance on him. From a PR standpoint they need sure things, even if the guys they get are assured to suck.

disgruntmetsfan: Only if they felt he was a viable option, and not a response to Halladay.

Twitter Poll: Do you support the Jason Bay offer?

With the Mets extending a four-year, $65 million offer to Jason Bay yesterday, Mets fans are seemingly split on the matter.  Do you support this move or no?

I took to Twitter and asked that very question.  Here are the responses…

djshort: Only if it's four years or less.

joewhitmarsh: Yes.

DanReilly11: I'd prefer Holliday or Lackey, but I'm fine with Bay at 4 years.

kramtelak: Mets need an OF with power period Bay Holliday whoever If it takes 65-70 then that's what it takes. Do we want to win Jeff?

dances_w_vowels: I support the offer, Bay would be a good offensive addition, but I can't see him putting up .280/35/110 in Citi.

cutiepie0319k: i like it. at this point i just want someone new that can hit and can make a difference.

With Matt Holliday still on the market, where do you stand?

Sherman: Mets talking to Brewers, Rangers [Twit Pic]

John Maine for Corey Hart? Hmm...

Interesting.  Glad the Mets are spreading their interest around, even if nothing pans out.  I hate when they lock in on targets and put their blinders on.

Mets have interest in Willingham? [Twitter]

Willingham tweetHere’s Ladson’s article on the Mets interest in Josh Willingham.

But here’s a pull from a Ladson article from two days ago…

LF Josh Willingham: The Braves are one team that has shown interest, but it seems doubtful the Nationals will trade him. He provided the power Washington needed last year and he was an excellent clubhouse presence.

(Ed. note: Over the course of the Winter Meetings, and likely for the rest of time on this site that Twitter is a relevant means of communication (hint: a while), you’ll see more posts like these.)

Twitter Poll: What will the Mets slogan be in 2010?

As we all await the signing of the next catcher, I asked my Twitter followers what they believe the 2010 Mets slogan will be.

As expected, no one thought I was serious and submitted joking and funny slogans.  I got a ton of responses, and they’re all pretty good, so check them out below…

nicolino11: It's not 2009!

Macho_Row: Sh*t happens?

mattclausen: You're 2010 Mets: Cuz Catchers are Everything

Dennis676: Right now… “The 2010 NY Mets...we're ‘catching’ up”

SusieTVaddict: ‘You give us your money, we'll give you the Shea Bridge’

790justin: New York Mets: Thank Goodness for the Natinals

RyanFingAwesome: Citi Field: at least we have a Shake Shack!

dances_w_vowels: “Guaranteed not to go 0-18!”

Majin_Bernard: "The Resurrection Begins"

justinleon: “Hey, at least we aren't the Nets”

Rad_Ryan: You stay with us, we'll give you aging players.

nymetropolitans: “Please buy tickets. We painted the stairwells orange and blue.”

dtmfr: Catch the Magic??

tyronem: “We will try harder not to make you claw your eyes out”

DanPirozzi: Disabled List Dropouts

realcinch: The New York Mets... We Can't Get Any Worse!

mtmcq: Minor League Baseball, at Major League prices

Do you have your own slogan you think the Mets will use in 2010?  Which one was your favorite?  Let us know in the comments!

Twitter Poll: Invite three Mets to Thanksgiving

Question: What three former or current Mets would you invite to Thanksgiving dinner, and why?

Here are some responses…

CMSB said: Doc and Darryl, because they'd bring the good stuff. Butch Huskey, so I could say "pass the turkey, Butch"

DanPirozzi said: Heilman so I can punch him, Piazza because he rules, and Rey Ordonez so I can throw biscuits at him and watch him catch them

DavitudeSports said: Beltran Reyes and Perez to thank them for the wonderful 09 season

mtmcq said:  Keith Hernandez, Gary Sheffield, and Darryl Strawberry. Imagine the conversations at that table.

dtmfr said: Seaver (the franchise, duh) Keith (good topic discussions), and Wright (my sister would like that)

julierubes said: Kevin Elster & Kevin McReynolds bc I thought they were cute when I was younger& want 2 c how they r now& Mookie bc of who he is

dances_w_vowels said: Keith Hernandez, for the wit. Nolan Ryan, for the awe. Kevin McReynolds, because #3 wouldn't get a word in anyway.

dances_w_vowels continued: Oh, and number 4... Len Dykstra, because he probably hasn't had a good meal in a few months.

djeffreys said: Keith for the Keithisms, Dykstra for the financial expertise and Benny Agbayani because how cool would that be?

Fletch788 said: Yoshii, Shinjo and Takahashi. Because I don't like Thanksgiving and they probably don't either.

billpalka said: mo vaughn, butch huskey, and lenny harris. Pie-eating contest.

Twitter Poll: Who is the most exciting prospect?

I took to Twitter to ask my followers which prospect excites them the most.

Here are some responses…

mattclausen said: Thole....guady BA numbers, smart hitter....will play perfectly in Citi

pattigibbons said: Ike Davis. He shows well-rounded promise as an infielder and as a hitter.

trmbonemulligan said: Ike Davis without a doubt. Maybe its just the hype but I feel like he could be another Delgado

kramtelak said: The prospect that nets the Mets Halladay.

I’m frightened by the point trmbonemulligan brings up.  Is Davis just hype?  Obviously, it’s too early to tell and we’ll only find out when he starts playing more and at a higher level.

I truly hope Davis isn’t just another product of the hype machine.  I’ve already penciled him into the lineup in the coming years.

Does that mean I’ve bought into the hype?

Twitter Poll: Do you regret buying a certain player’s jersey?

When the Mets traded for J.J. Putz last off-season, a lot of people hurried out to the store to purchase a new shirt for No. 22.

Not even a full year later, it’s likely that Putz is done as a member of the Mets.

So I asked my Twitter followers if they regret buying a certain player’s jersey.  Here are some responses…

PaulsRandomStuf said: I own a Mo Vaughn Mets t-shirt. Do I really have to explain the reason for the regret? ;-)

fallacyofromeJH said: Kaz matsui....for obvious reasons

IvanCTorres said: kaz matsui! bought it right before his first year with the Mets

PessimisticMet said: my roberto alomar jersey is looking real nice right about now.

BigVin57 said: i bought Roberto Alomar and Mo Vaughn shirts. waste of money

benbarbato said: I bought a Ryan Church T-Shirt last year. Loved Church, felt he never got the chance to be what he could've been.

ambilevous said: two words. Alay Soler.

BlueAndOrange said: YUP totally bought a Hidalgo shirt.. thought he was gonna be around longer than a day.

MaryL1973 said: Yes, Paul Lo Duca because he was not the person I thought.

That’s quite a “team” we could field from these jerseys.

Putz on the mound, Lo Duca behind the plate, Vaughn at first, Alomar at second, Matsui at shortstop, Hidalgo and Church in the OF.
