Jon Switzer sent down, Argenis Reyes recalled

Lefty reliever Jon Switzer has been designated for assignment, reports Adam Rubin.

Update – 4:45 p.m.: Argenis Reyes has been recalled, tweets Bart Hubbuch.

Original post: This is likely the precursor move to the earlier suggested by Rubin, who mentioned that Argenis Reyes would likely be in uniform very soon.

No official word on Reyes or other move yet.

Is Lance Broadway New York City-bound?

DepthThe depth chart on Mets.com is probably the last place I’d be looking for roster news, but as I was glancing at it while working on another story a new name caught my eye.

On the bottom of the bullpen depth chart, Lance Broadway’s name is listed.  No longer on the list is Jon Switzer.

Broadway, as you may remember, was the player the Mets landed when they traded away Ramon Castro.

Broadway is 1-3 in six starts with the Bisons.  He has a 5.97 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP in 31 2-3 innings.

It seems the people over at Hot Foot spotted this too.

Haven’t heard anything about this possible move yet, so who knows what is up here.  I wouldn’t be against the move if it did come to fruition.

Fernando Nieve gets the start; Jon Switzer called up

Fernando Nieve, recently called up to replace J.J. Putz, will be tabbed for the start on Saturday.  Nieve will be pitching in place of John Maine, put on the DL last night with dead arm.

Nieve, a righty, has started five games with Buffalo and is 3-0 on the season.  He allowed 10 earned runs in 24 1-3 innings for a 3.75 ERA and a WHIP of 1.167.  Nieve has walked 10 and struck out 23, allowing 18 hits.

With Double-A Binghamton this season, Nieve made four starts and appeared in one other game.  In 18 1-3 innings, he has a 5.00 ERA and 1.22 WHIP.  He allowed 10 earned runs, walked six and struck out 19.

He pitched two innings of mop-up duty, ironically in a game that Maine started, back on June 26.  Nieve allowed one hit over the two innings on the bump, striking out two.

To replace Maine on the roster, the Mets called up lefty Jon Switzer.

Switzer is 0-2 in 25 1-3 innings with the Bisons.  He has a 2.13 ERA, allowing 10 runs, six earned.  He’s walked nine and struck out 29 batters.  Switzer has a 1.20 WHIP in 2009.

Previously in Boston’s minor league system last year, Switzer has pitched in the majors in four different seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays.  In 68 career games, he has a 6.11 ERA and a 1.794 WHIP.

Mets add two pitchers

The Mets have announced the signings of two pitchers that will be joining them in spring training. No, they're names are not Sheets or Perez.

Righty Kyle Snyder and lefty Jon Switzer were brought on board, likely to serve as bullpen fodder at triple-A. Both ex-Red Sox, they've seen significant time in the minor leagues last season, and will look for a hot spring to possibly land them on a major league roster.

If not, I'm sure we'll see one, or both, at some time due to injuries.

Anthony DiComo also lists all the non-roster invites for spring training.

They are:
Nelson Figueroa, Michael Antonini, Dillon Gee and Tobi Stoner, left-handed pitchers Adam Bostick, Casey Fossum and Tom Martin, catchers Rene Rivera, Omir Santos and Josh Thole, infielders Andy Green, Michel Abreu and Jose Coronado, and outfielder Fernando Martinez.
