The old guys want out.
The Mets that filed for free agency: Moises Alou (42), Pedro Martinez (37), Tony Armas, Jr. (30), Luis Ayala (30), Ramon Martinez (36) and Ricardo Rincon (38).
These six players ages add up to 213 years, for a mean age of 35.5.
No way Alou comes back. No chance. He can still hit, but he can't stay healthy at all. R. Martinez and Rincon are as good as gone, too.
I took a long look at Pedro and don't expect him to come back, but he might. It's a toss-up. (There are some great comments on that article. Worth a look.)
Ayala could return, but I doubt it. I think the Mets would rather shed the old bullpen and bring in new players instead of re-signing the players that made it terrible. Armas could end up in AAA with a minor league deal, as he wasn't half bad when the Mets needed him.
Don't be surprised when none of these players return in 2009.

Game Recap: Phillies 3 -- Mets 0
That was no fun. (I'll keep this short and sweet.)
Pitching Performance
Mike Pelfrey pitched very well. He allowed an unearned run in the first inning, and a two run home that Ryan Church almost caught in the top of the seventh. He allowed only four hits, walked two, and struck out four.
He did not deserve the loss, but the Mets offense was stifled last night by a dominating performance from Brett Myers. Pelfrey is still so surprising. I didn't think he'd be half of what he is right now this season.
Brian Stokes, Ricardo Rincon, and Duaner Sanchez all pitched, each retiring every batter they faced and tallying two K's.
Love the Stokes.
Offensive Output
Brett Myers was ON. Eight innings, three hits, only two walks, while striking out 10 Mets.
The Mets threatened in the bottom of the ninth against Brad Lidge, but were unable to push anyone across.
Daniel Murphy went 2-4, with a double, as he was the only Met to tally multiple hits. David Wright, Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran also had hits for the Mets. Wright and Beltran's each were of the two-bagger variety.
It's one game, so don't get all up in arms. The Mets just have to come back today (or probably tomorrow due to rain) and win the next two.

September call-ups
Joe Janish beat me to it. Check out Mets Today for a complete rundown of the call-ups and who can and can't be added.
I'm not going to put a lot of stock into Jon Niese or Bobby Parnell. There seems to be too much hype behind them, and I don't think they're going to come up and have a huge impact on the team.
Guys like Al Reyes and Ricardo Rincon should help, simply because another arm in the bullpen cannot hurt at this time. It's a crap shoot in the pen right now, and Luis Ayala worked for a few games. Lightning in a bottle could be found anywhere. Hopefully one of these guys can be a lightning rod.
Marlon Anderson will be nice to have back, as long as he can recapture his pinch hitting prowess.
Don't look for a huge help from the September call-ups, but Niese will get the start on Tuesday against the Brewers. Maybe he could do something special against the streaking Brew-crew. Wouldn't that be nice?
