Mets release three

Tony Armas Jr., Junior Spivey and Jose "The Stache" Valentin have all been released by the Mets.

Stache will be missed the most. He still wants to play, but it won't be long until Valentin is coaching a team at some level.

Armas Jr. will be back, among three others

Three pitchers and an outfielder. (Sounds like a bad reality show on the MLB Network.)

Tony Armas Jr. will be returning to the Mets organization and Matt DeSalvo, Valerio de los Santos and Bobby Kielty will be the newcomers to the the team.

I like Armas Jr., as he's versatile to start or be the long-man if needed.

Nothing really important to note here, only that Kielty looks a heck of a lot like the bad guy from The Incredibles.

Six Mets file for FA

The old guys want out.

The Mets that filed for free agency: Moises Alou (42), Pedro Martinez (37), Tony Armas, Jr. (30), Luis Ayala (30), Ramon Martinez (36) and Ricardo Rincon (38).

These six players ages add up to 213 years, for a mean age of 35.5.

No way Alou comes back. No chance. He can still hit, but he can't stay healthy at all. R. Martinez and Rincon are as good as gone, too.

I took a long look at Pedro and don't expect him to come back, but he might. It's a toss-up. (There are some great comments on that article. Worth a look.)

Ayala could return, but I doubt it. I think the Mets would rather shed the old bullpen and bring in new players instead of re-signing the players that made it terrible. Armas could end up in AAA with a minor league deal, as he wasn't half bad when the Mets needed him.

Don't be surprised when none of these players return in 2009.

With John Maine on the shelf, do the Mets promote Jon Niese

According to David Lennon, "John Maine, who was diagnosed with a rotator-cuff strain on Tuesday, is likely to miss Sunday's start in Houston and possibly the next one, as well."

Adam Rubin sees it differently, saying, "Maine, who has been diagnosed with a mild strain of the rotator cuff in his right shoulder, no longer is officially listed as Sunday's starter in Houston. The expectation is Oliver Perez instead will pitch on standard rest that day against the Astros.

Maine may not miss a full turn, and could re-enter the rotation as soon as Tuesday at Shea."

The Mets are planning to be safe, rather than sorry. I like it.

With Jonathan Niese's stellar start in AAA, could the Mets call him up so soon to see what he can do at the major league level? There are other options, such as Nelson Figueroa, Brian Stokes, and Tony Armas Jr., but why not Niese?

A little youth wouldn't be so bad on this squad. Plus, we've seen what Figueroa and Armas are capable of. I doubt the Mets would promote their best prospect, at a mere 21 years old, right in the middle of a pennant race. My gut says that Armas will get the call if he's ready to go.

Still, the Mets need Maine to get healthy. He's a young, solid pitcher who they have penciled into the rotation for years to come. Expect Niese to come up to the majors in September when the roster's expand.

TSTDIA: Mets 7 -- Cardinals 4

Tony Armas Jr. pitched pretty well and the Mets offense came alive to come back from a deficit for a very solid game all around the diamond.

Our second short tri-state nightmare is over

Andy Phillips, we hardly knew ye.

Phillips was DFA as the Mets called up Tony Armas Jr. to make Tuesday's start against the Cardinals.

Our first tri-state nightmare came when the Mets tested Abraham Nunez out to the tune of two AB's. Phillips was lucky enough to score five at bats with the Metropolitans, making me half right. Last Thursday, I predicted Phillips' tenure with the Mets would last ten at bats.

Good luck, Armas. Find some way to right this Mets ship.

Fix the Mets

We're having a pretty nice discussion over at Mets Lounge about what everyone would do if they were the GM of the Mets.

Pretty simple, I think, but I have a few moves I would make now or in the very immediate future. All moves are in-house.
  • Bring up Mike Carp. Send Robinson Cancel back to AAA. This would immediately put pressure on Carlos Delgado.
  • Bring up Dan Murphy. Send Trot Nixon back to AAA. This would immediately put pressure on Luis Castillo.
  • Look into trading Oliver Perez. If possible, pull the trigger, attempt to get at least two decent minor leaguers in return. Promote Tony Armas Jr.
  • If Murphy/Castillo/Damion Easley doesn't work out, call Cincinnati or Baltimore about their second baseman. (via Wrighteous.)
  • Don't hurry Ryan Church. Wait until Sunday to bring him back. Make sure he's 110 percent. The Mets need that bat.
  • Platoon Endy Chavez, Marlon Anderson, Fernando Tatis in right field.
Anything I missed? Hit the comments for your suggestions.

Muniz gets another shot

The Mets have designated Claudio Vargas for assignment and called up Carlos Muniz for his spot on the roster.

While Vargas had been fairly effective as a long relief man, he surrendered four runs in two innings last night against the Mariners.

Muniz, who had a much lower ERA at the beginning of the year, is now sporting a 3.18 ERA in 28 1-3 innings pitched.

Muniz is 2008's Heath Bell and Royce Ring. Up and down, up and down. Tony Armas Jr. must be wondering what else he must do to get the call.

Don't expect Tatis or Armas Jr. anytime soon

Tony Armas Jr. and Fernando Tatis, two non-roster invitees are both struggling with their visa's, and will have a tough time making the squad.

Marty Noble quotes GM Omar Minaya as saying that the visa issues "will make it tough" for him to win a job. "It's up to the State Department."

Noble points out Tatis never really had a shot of making the team, regardless of visa issues.

Armas Jr. had a shot at making the club eventually, due to an injury, I feel. But if he's not in camp, that's not going to happen. I didn't like the deal when they signed him, so I guess I should be a bit happy about him never appearing in camp.
