Pedro Martinez has been quoted that "we're aiming for July or August as the return date."
"The problem has to do with the calcification of the bone that was broken with the tear and that had to be operated on."
He also said that he has added about 10 pounds of muscle, as part of their plan.
...sounds like a good outlook to me, putting on the weight and all too. hopefully we can get to july/august with our current staff (barring trades / signings) which i believe we can...
...Glavine looked great at the end, and with out young guns gearing up to show what they've got, i think we will be pretty good until Petey comes back...

Uh-Oh? Zito to sign with the Giants?
Sources at ESPN.com are reporting that they believe Barry Zito will sign with the San Francisco Giants.
The deal is rumored to be 7-years, $18 mil per season.
Zito, who already lives in the area, looks like he will continue to stay there for a long time.
... damn! i really thought we would sign him, for about 5 years, and he would be the guy, that one single link in the chain of players that completes the team, and makes us a legacy and not just a great team...
...shucks...

Report on Zito Talks.
...so many different sources are reporting that the Mets talks with Barry Zito went very well. They all say that Omar and his team made great headway into bringing Zito to New York...
...excellent. i am so pumped for the big offseason signing Omar will hopefully pull off. it's the bright light during the long stretch without baseball. If there was no Hot Stove Reports or anything of that matter, i don't know what i would do with these barren months...
...there have also been rumors about bringing Mark Mulder on board if we don't sign Zito...
...boy, we really like ex-A's pitchers. they are both products of Rick 'The Jacket' Peterson, so we know they're good, and under his watchful eye again, he could probably make them even better...
...so here is to the big offseason move we have become accustomed to with Omar...

Zito to Meet Next Week
Free Agent Barry Zito looks like he will be meeting with the Mets next week in NYC.
...promising...very promising...
The Mets are also rumored to be interested in Jeff Suppan.
...i guess we're going with the "if you can't beat them, sign them to your team" theory. i wouldn't mind Suppan, as he is a good pitcher, i just wouldn't want to overspend on him...

Mazilli joins Mets crew...in the studio
Lee Mazilli will join Matt Yallof in the SNY studios next season.
This will allow Darling, Hernandez, and Cohen to work together on a more regular basis.
...well my dad has been pulling for Mazilli to join Randolphs coaching staff, so i guess that won't happen...
...maybe he can pull a Girardi and anchor for a season, and then jump back into coaching...
...and a "yay" for the trio of DarNanEn back into the booth!...
(i apologize for that terrible nickname)

Mets to gain right to Matsuzaka?
HotFoot is reporting that if the contract talks break down between Boston and Daisuke Matsuzaka the Comissioner of baseball has the right to award the next highest team to negotiate with him.
The next highest bidding team: The New York Mets.
...this information isn't 100% credible as it comes from a Wiki, but if anyone has the time to write up mock baseball rules...well...they must have no life...
...so if we can even talk to talk to Matsuzaka i think we would completely lose out on Zito as he would see where our alliegences lie...
...i think they should persue Zito as he is proven against major league hitters, and would not cost $40 mil just to talk contracts and numbers...

50 game suspension does not phase the Mets.
It seems that Guillermo Mota and the Mets have agreed to a 2 year deal, worth $5 mil.
Mota is suspended the first 50 games of 2007 after violating MLB drug policy.
...with the way he pitched at the end, i can see why the mets are signing this guy even with the suspension.
...that makes two Mets who have violatied (Yasuruku Iriki)
...i really do like this deal though. and for the way the market has been lately, this is dirt cheap...

News: HoJo at first and other notes
Howard Johnson has been hired as the new first base coach for the Mets.
Sandy Alomar moves to third.
...the burning question for me is...
can alomar still do the windmill?
i dont want him breaking a hip or anything...
~~~~
Seems the Dodgers have reached an agreement with Jason Schmidt for a 3-year, $47 mil.
...damn...
And Mike Piazza is very close to signing with the A's.
...as long as it's not the phillies.
...and i think mikey will look slick in those white shoes...
Mets close to trade..
The Mets are close to trading for Royals relief pitcher Ambiorix Burgos.
The Royals are looking to get a pitching prospect in return.
...well, i can't say that name at all...
...im assuming they want Bannister, Maine, or Pelfrey. i'm very scared to give up any of them, as they all look way too promising. i would love to keep them all, along with Perez and have a really solid rotation...
Bannister Available?
MLB Trade Rumors ponders if Brian Bannister may be dealt to get a good reliever after Chad Bradford signed a 3 year, $10.25 mil. deal with the O's.
...hmm, i pretty much forgot about him after his looooong lasting hamstring injury. he pitched fairly well, and i think he could be pretty good...so be careful trading him...i don't want this to bite us in the butt in a few years...
Could the '86 Mets happen now?
Joe Sports Fan has put together a very cool article seeing if the 1986 Mets team could be put together now with their adjusted salaries.
The '86 team had a payroll of about $12.5 mil.
The team would now cost an estimated $121 mil.
"What does all of that mean? Even with all of the ridiculous contracts being tossed around throughout the league, if you took one of the great teams of the past twenty years and paid them in todays baseball money, theyd still be a cool $80 million cheaper than the Yankees.
Isnt baseball great?
...hahahaha. great article. well done. great line at the end there...
Bye-Bye Bradford!
OH NO!
say it 'aint so Omar!
Chad Bradford has agreed to a 3 year, $10.5mil. with the Orioles.
...ohhhh man. this was the main guy i wanted back from the bullpen this year....
...as matt cerrone said, "this means we can't use Aaron Heilman as a trading chip."...
...which i don't especially hate, because i think he can be good out of the pen, as long as he doesnt whine about starting...
Sorry about the lack of posts.
Sorry for missing out on the Henry Owens/Matt Lindstrom for Jason Vargas/Adam Bostick trade...
...well, i really never though we'd see Owens go, but i guess he never progressed into the closer/set up man we expected. Vargas started in the Marlins rotation, but ended up coming out of the pen...
let Dr. Rick Peterson get his hands on these two guys, and see what magic he can turn...
...please feel free to use the comments section as your discussion forum.
Opinion: Alou
Moises Alou...
Omar, I'm not too sure about this one.
He's 40 years old, and you want him to run around the vast outfield of Shea?
Sure he hit .346 against left handed pitchers last year, while the entire Mets team hit .254.
But this isn't the type of player that meshes with a team. He is a clubhouse killer, and thats something we do not need. We had amazing clubhouse chemistry last year, as was shown when Wright and Glavine flanked Lo Duca during that little press conference. These guys are friends as well as teammates, don't bring in someone who will put that in jeopardy...
Before you do this, resign Endy Chavez! He was amazing last year, and under Willie's guidance became a singles and doubles hitter, instead of swinging for the fences. He was near perfect in the field. He hit .333 against lefties. He has more speed in the field and on the basepath, and has shown he can play the outfield in Shea. He is young and has shown he has the ability to play every day...
Granted you do resign Endy and Alou...
does this mean Endy is relugated to the bench again??
What else does this guy have to do to earn a starting job? He is a perfect 7 or 8 hitter. He gets you singles (to clear the pitcher spot), has speed (to be bunted over) and is amazing in the field. But you go out and sign a 41 year old, who is injury prone, and only played in 98 games last year due to injuries...
so in conclusion...
DON'T sign Alou
DO sign Chavez
News: Moises Alou
first off...NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
Tons of rumors out there saying that the Mets and Moises Alou are very close to a deal.
The details vary, between a one year deal w/ an option or a 2 year deal.
...i remember we almost traded for him last year. WHY?!?! he's 41, stinks at playing outfield, and is a terrible guy in the clubhouse!!
this strikes me as downright stupid.
and he pees on his hands!!!!
ugh...i do not like this deal!
Mets sign Damion Easley
The Mets have signed utility man Damion Easley to a one-year, $850,000 contract.
He has played every position but pitcher and catcher in his 15 years.
...hopefully this turns out just like all of Omar's other tiny moves.
he's good at those types of things, ya know...
...hat tip to Hot Foot for the link...
Johnson to breakout in '07?
Hot Foot does some digging in the Padres.com mailbag about breakout players and comes up with this...
"Ben Johnson comes to mind, once again, as a player who could make an impact in the outfield. Perhaps a new manager with a clean slate will work to Johnson's advantage. It's happened before, and the man from Memphis certainly has the tools to be an exciting everyday performer similar to his good buddy, Barfield."
...sounds good to me. seriously, to me he sounds like a Xavier Nady. someone under the radar who is going to have a breakout year.
...i sure hope i'm right...
Trade: Ring and Bell for Adkins and Johnson
Pitchers Royce Ring and Heath Bell have been traded to the San Diego Paders for RHP Jon Adkins and OF Ben Johnson...
...Bell and Ring are good pitchers. not great, just good. they were both up and down all year with the Mets, and never really looked as if they'd make it...
...Johnson, primarily a left or center fielder, played 58 games for SD last year. in 120 AB's he hit .250, 4 HR, and 3 SB. had a shoulder issue last year which caused him to miss some games...
...utility outfielder, or next Xavier Nady?
...Adkins, a righty relief pitcher, pitched in 55 games going 2-1 with a 3.98 ERA.
he pitched 3 innings against the mets last year, surrendering 4 hits and 2 ER...
Joe Girardi won NL Manager of the Year.
Jim Leyland won it in the American League.
...well, Girardi did do an amazing job. i can't argue that this is a dumb call of anything. he really did do wonders with what he had.
willie will get his soon...
Reader Comment: Mazzilli for 3B
Ok, so a faithful reader (my dad) has sent me an email with his thoughts on the third base coaching job...
To quote him...
"My pick is Lee Mazzilli. Revered Met, experienced coach, worked with Randolph on Yanks, experienced in managing w/ Orioles. Should have been a Met coach long ago."
...he has a point. this would make alot of sense. he spent 10 years with the orginization, and has worked with Randolph...
good choice dad!
p.s. This sort of thing can become common! as a reader, if you would like to voice your opinion, just shoot me an e-mail or IM, and if its good, you can get a post.
(this will work in place of a comments section. its coming eventually)
In Omar I Trust, but...
One of my favorite bloggers, John Delcos, posted a few notes about a phone conversation he had with GM Omar Minaya...
He mentioned the El Duque and Valentin signings.
...the Valentin one is where i will question him. he says he is comfertable with him at 2B, as am i...but he also mentions he will test the market, and would use him in LF.
...left?? why? there has to be a better utility man out there that can play those positions better.
i don't feel comfertable with him out there.
2B for sure. he was too solid last year to not doubt.
but left?
Omar also said they have made offers to Bradford and Floyd...
...good. Bradford was solid all year.
and Floyd, well...third base coach?
Update: Duque and Acta
Apparently El Duque is getting more money than we expected. The deal is now said to be woth $5.5 per year.
So now it's a 2-year deal worth $11 mil.
...well, thats alot more money.
it just makes me believe Omar trusts him as a pitcher and a mentor...
~Manny Acta was oficially hired to coach the Washington Nationals today.
...HoJo or Carter...those are my picks for 3B coach...
~The Matsuzaka bidding war seems to have been won by the Boston Red Sox.
They are rumored to have bid $50 mil. The Mets are said to have bid $38 mil., a distant second.
...38 mil. wow. that really shocks me. i didn't know they were that into Matsuzaka...
all the better, $38 million more for Zito.
~Brandon Webb has won the Cy Young Award in the NL. Billy Wagner came in 6th.
...Webb had a great year. i really can't make much of a argument that Wagner should have won, but maybe next year...
Mets re-sign El Duque
Matt Cerrone at MetsBlog is reporting that El Duque has signed a 2-year deal worth $6 mill.
...i'm very happy about this. i really liked what he did for us last year. he is a good pitcher, who can come out of the pen for long relief, and start as well...
it will be interesting to see where he falls in the rotation. spring training will be mighty interesting...
Update: Groundbreaking = Mind Numbing
This may be one of the most anti-climactic moments ever.
I'm so excited to see the stadium, go to games, enjoy the facilities. I just want it to be up right now, and go watch some baseball. I was fairly excited to see the groundbreaking, hoping maybe they would have some new graphics, insight into the stadium (besides this).
So i hustled back from classes to flip on SNY to see the almighty Chuck Norris dishing some workout product.
I ran across campus for this?
Ok...11:30, here comes Darling and Yallof! Great! Let's get this started!
Oh, and "Hi Chris Cotter", I've missed you.
It is just speech after speech after speech.
It is so boring.
Good to see Reyes, Wright and Maine there...but gosh, i think they'd rather be back in Japan right about now.
And now...its 12:12, I haven't even seen a shovel yet.
If my memory serves me correctly, Jackie Robinson never played with the Mets.
I understand he was an amazing player, and had such a huge impact on the league, but the "Jackie Robinson Rotunda" in the new Mets stadium doesn't make much sense to me.
What about the "Bob Murphy Rotunda"??
Doesn't that make alot more sense?!
update:: 12:39
Finally some shovels!
yay!
But wait...why are they just tossing the dirt right back on the pile?!
Shouldn't they fling it over their shoulders, or at least put it in a wheelbarrow??
and I can just see it now...right in my e-mail box...
"Buy David Wright's Hardhat from Groundbreaking Ceremony!!!
Only $299.99!"
haha
Groundbreaking
Today at 11 AM, ground will be broken on the Mets new stadium, Citi Field.
You can watch the event live on SNY.
...i unfortunately cannot. i have class...bummer.
The deal is said to be worth $20 mill annually for 20 years.
This is double what the Houston Texans get annually for naming rights on Reliant Stadium.
There is an option to take Citi Field's naming rights to 35 years.
...it's no "Shea" and its no "Petco".
i really don't mind the new name, it could be so much worse...
but really. MetLife really missed their chance here...
Heres a shocker...Valentin back to the Mets
This one take me by surprise.
Jose Valentin and the Mets are close to finishing up a one year, $4 mil. contract.
...i'm assuming he will be taking the place of utility man Chris Woodward...??
but he can't play as many positions.
Acta to coach Nationals
Mets third base coach Manny Acta will be named coach of the Washington Nationals this week.
...ok. this really doesn't bother me much. it's not like he was a "third base coach extrodinare" or anything...
Now the question is who will take his place...?
...i'm pulling for Gary Carter!!!!
Reyes and Beltran win silver slugger awards.
Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran have each been named NL Silver Sluggers...
"Silver Slugger Awards were determined by a vote of MLB managers and coaches who selected the opposing players they felt were the best offensive producers at each position in the American and National Leagues, explains the report.
...congrats to both the guys, they really do deserve it. Beltran had a comeback year, and Reyes had a breakout year. beautiful combo!...
Glavine files for FA.
Tom Glavine has filed for Free Agency.
This does not mean he will not be a Met next year, and he is still only talking with Atlants and the Mets.
...i have a feeling he will be back with us. just the way he came on at the end of the season, and almost had to carry the team, and he fits in as a player...i just have a feeling he will be back...
2B option...Adam Kennedy?
The Post is reporting that free agent 2B Adam Kennedy has shown interest in the Mets.
"...his agent, Paul Cohen, said he has "definite interest" in the Mets."
...he would only be a two year guy in my opinon.
he's 31 and not a real power guy. (.273, 4 hr, 55 rbi) but i could see him hitting 7 or 8.
he made 9 errors last season, so he is a pretty good fielder.
he also has the sort of 'tough guy/hustle' characteristic like Paul Lo Duca...
so thats an option...
Matsuzaka bids are in...
Bids for Japanese RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka are all in, with the Yankees having the only definite bid.
The Seibu Lions have until Tuesday to announce the "winner" of the bidding process. The winner is then allowed to begin discussions with Matsuzaka and super-agent Scott Boras.
Mets, Rangers, Cubs, and Red Sox were also rumored to have had interest in the pitcher.
...i'm not completely sold that he is worth all this money. he may end up being a great pitcher but spending $20 mil. just to start talking to the guy is a heckuva lot of money. that $20mil could just as easily go to Zito who has a proven record against MLB hitters.
granted Matsuzaka pitched in the WBC and was the MVP of the tourney, he still is unproven in a big market like NY with all the pressures that would come along of spending $20mil + contract...(see Carlos Beltran)
...and we all know our track record with japanese imports...
Adam Kennedy Update
It seems as though the Mets have contacted Adam Kennedy for the 2B job...
...He is 31 years old, a lefty, career .280 hitter...
Kennedy is fairly solid in the field, which is what we really need, more than hitting.
He is also a "scrappy" sort of guy, something along the lines of Adam Eckstein or Joe McEwing...
I could really see him fitting in with the team, and giving Anderson Hernandez time to find his swing...
Glavine close to two year deal...
Adam Rubin says in todays Daily News that Tom Glavine is close to signing a 2 year deal with the Mets.
The deal would be worth around $25 million dollars...
... i'd love to see glavine back, as he seems like a real team player, and pitched fairly well last year. i'm hoping he stays with the mets, and gets his 300 here. so that looks real promising...
Carlos Delgado had his second surgery in 8 days...
The first surgery was on the carpal tunnel in his right wrist...
This surgery was for tennis elbow on his left arm...
5 Mets file for Free Agency
Mets.com says "The five Mets who filed were Cliff Floyd, Steve Trachsel, Ricky Ledee, Orlando Hernandez and Chris Woodward."
what to do with them...
Floyd-- maybe a one year deal. if not...Hey Cliff, want to coach??
Trachsel-- No thank you!
Ledee-- not in a million years.
Hernandez-- Would love to see him back. 2 year deal?
Woodward-- where were you this year?!? maybe a 2 year deal, $1 mil...
....and we're back!
it took some time to collect my thoughts and feelings after game 7...
Since that day...free agent to be Cliff Floyd has undergone surgery on his achillies tendon. His recovery time is seen at 4 months.
...we may not see Cliff back in baseball again...his only chance is probably with the Mets...
...next year boys, next year...
Last Night...
I finally got my emotions semi- in order...
Last night was something special...from about 5 o'clock, when I got out of class, I had goosebumps. My stomach was in knots, I can't tell you how much my hands were shaking...
Coming up on gametime, I did all my rituals, put on the Mets batting helmet (backward for defense, foward when they're batting) I also put up the lucky cardboard box, and filled out my scorecard. I had to leave the door open on our dorm room, and had to blast "Meet The Mets" (original version) very loud for all to hear...
This was one of the best games ive seen, by both teams...
I especially will not forget Endy's catch...that was one of the most beautiful catches I've ever seen...top play of the year in my book...
I will not forget this game. I've been a lifelong Mets fan, my dad is a mets fan, so i've followed in his footsteps. About 3 years ago, i started to watch religously...i would watch and/or listen to as many games as possible. This year put me over the top. I have purchased so many mets shirts, hats, weird little knick knack items (like one of those light up glass things you buy on the streets of NYC) I've started blogging, and now have my own domain...as you can obviously tell...
Thats why it hurt so bad last night...
I've put so much emotion into this team, so many amazing moments and the few bad ones. The team has been so high (11 run inning in Chicago, sweeping the Braves...just so many) and we've hit some rough patches (No Pedro, No El Duque...a few more, but it pains me to think...)
But here we are...2 runs away from going to the World Series...
I have to say, this was an amazing year...we should be proud of what they did, but we should look forward to next year...
The team will be stronger, more well rounded, and they will be hungrier...alot hungrier.
They tasted it, but they're going to want more...
Omar...Willie...and all the guys...lets do this again...
Ya Gotta Believe!
...Almost There...
We're about 60 minutes away from gametime...
and I've never been so nervous.
I cannot imagine what Oliver Perez must be feeling...hopefully nothing.
he should just go out and throw the ball right past those Cardinals (not past Lo Duca though, no Wild Thing tonight Olli.)
We need someone on the offense to have a HUGE game...
Wright, Delgado, Beltran..one of them needs to have a monster game...
alright...you know the rally cry...
...Game 7...
The table is set...
With a 4-2 win in Game 6, there will be a 7th, and deciding game tomorrow night...
John Maine pitched an amazing game...giving up 2 hits over 5 1/3...
...he got out of a huge jam in the first, and settled in real well...he was scaring me with his walks every inning. but he stayed cool and pitched great.
....Billy Wagner....i dont know what to say...he is a heartattack pitcher...that was such a mess...he couldn't put away anyone after having them deep in the count...
...cmon Billy, stop worrying about what you're going to write in the Post tomorrow...and pitch the darn ball!
~Game 7~
Suppan v. Perez(?)
Oliver Perez will likely start the game, with Darren Oliver coming out of the pen if Perez gets in any trouble at all...
We need a huuuuge game from the offense, that was completely shut down by Suppan last game...
...keep it up boys...
Hot Foot remembers the last "Game 6"
Over at HotFoot, they remember the last Game 6 @ Shea...
The infamous Game 6 of the '86 WS...
"We believe because we've seen it with our own eyes.
We believe because there is no other option.
We believe because time and again, the Mets have come back from great obstacles all year long.
We believe because we watched them compile the best record in baseball despite the fact you couldn't tell who might be on the mound from one day to the next.
We believe because of Wright's walkoff against Mariano.
We believe because of Carlos's walkoff in the 16th against the Phillies.
We believe because of Wright's walkoff in the 14th inning against the Braves.
We believe because of Carlos's first pitch walk off against the Cardinals.
We believe because we are Mets fans.
I believe.
Ya gotta believe."
Game 5: Cards 4 - Mets 2
...not good.
Tom Glavine looked ok, but continually got squeezed by Jeff Kellogg. Kellogg did not establish any strike zone what-so-ever. He was calling strikes all over the place (especially the strike to Jose Valentin with two on and two out)
Again Glavine pitched great ball through the first 3 innings. Then hit his bumps in the 4th and 5th.
The Mets left 8 players on...2 in the first, 2 in the 8th...
Back to Shea tomorrow night for Game 6...
Maine v. Carpenter...
this should be a tense game, Maine needs to throw the game of his life, and we need to get to Carp early...
...im very nervous...
Morning Notes
Tonights matchup is Glavine v. Weaver...
Carpenter will pitch Game 6...
Pujols has a sore right hammy...
(you never want players to be injured, no matter what team, but its playoff time, and it seems only fair to have the other team get hurt once in a while too)
Newsday is reporting that El Duque could go Game 1 of the World Series, if the Mets make it that far...
to quote Rick Peterson, after a 72 ptich bullpen session from Hernandez...
"He was excellent"
Game 5 Rained out
Game 5 has been rained out, every game will be shifted back a day...
so game 5 will be tomorrow...
This gives Glavine an extra says rest, which is very good for us...
He will hopefully pitch much better going on 4 days rest instead of 3...
The Bats Awake!
The Mets offense arrived in St. Louis a day later, and rocked the Cards bullpen for 12 runs.
Beltran homered twice, and Wright and Delgado both hit shots too.
Oliver Perez pitched alot better than anyone expected, and if we werent up by alot, he would have only been in long enough to give up 3 runs.
so were all tied up!
Weather Forecast for Game 5: RAIN!
there is an 70% chance of rain in St. Louis accoring to Weather.com...
to quote the weather man..."its not looking good for the game"
well...more rest for Glavine, thats probably a good thing...
and alllot more rest for the Tigers.
uhoh...Cards take 2-1 lead in series.
Im a wreck.
The Mets and Wagner let one go in Game 2...
and then they didn't even show up in Game 3...
this is realllly not good.
Oliver Perez will pitch today...and hopefully pitch very well...because our long relief man Darren Oliver pitched 7 amazing inngings yesterday trying to salvage the Steve Trachsel disaster.
D. Oliver gave up 3 hits (one was with the bases loaded, but those were Trax's men...also a WP) in 7 superb innings.
So...that means either today will be a 6-7 inning bar none...
or Chris Woodward will be on the mound as we scramble for anyone that can throw the ball over the plate.
Game 1: Mets 2 - Cards 0
CARLOS BELTRAN! wow. that ball was outtttta here.
Tom Glavine was just unbelieveable last night. Guillermo Mota was great. Billy Wagner was excellent.
9 innings of 4 hit ball. That's just amazing. "King Albert" went 0-3 with a strikeout.
The game ball goes to Glavine, Mota, Wagner, and Beltran.
David Wright had two very nice plays in the field, including a 5-3 line out double play, to get Tom out of a jam.
Jose Valentin madea a very nice play in the 9th...falling away from first and Carlos Delgado dug out the throw for the 2nd out. that was nice.
Looks like we lost the Cliff Floyd gamble...He left the game in the second inning after tweaking it during his at bat. Endy Chavez came in and played very well in the field...going into the stands attemtping to make a catch, and then a very nice diving catch in the 7th to help out glav...
so on to Game 2...Maine v. Carpenter...
it will be fairly cold tonight, i dont really know if that will help or hurt us. Hopefully Maine can give us 5 or 6 innings af solid baseball, and we can pass in onto the bullpen. The pen is well rested after the days off and needing only 3 pitchers in Game 1.
Maine vs. Carpenter: Game 2 @ 8
(Note: The Detroit/Oakland game has been moved up to 4:20 to attempt to avoid snow...)
Yankee pitcher Cory Lidle was killed when his plane crashed into an apartment building in NYC.
...our thoughts go out to Lidle's family and friends...
...in a bizarre connection, John Delcos reported...
First, there was news the Cardinals' team bus was delayed because of the snarled traffic caused by the crash. Then came the news it was Cory Lidle's plane. And, then that the building was where Manny Acta lived.
..woah.
again...our thoughts are with Lidle's family and friends, and also with the flight instructors family and friends...
Tuesday @ Shea.
Both teams are at Shea Stadium today, participating in various workouts and warmups...
Hey, Mets...please stretch alot! No calf injuries!!
The Mets will most likely announce Tom Glavine as thier Game 1 starter. Which will be no surprise to anyone.
The Burning Question(s): Will Cliff Floyd make the roster? If not, who takes his place?
...From what I saw, the amount of pain Floyd was in, it did not look good for him. That means either Oliver Perez or Dave Williams can make the team and possibly start Game 4...
Oh, Happy Day!
Yanks Lose 8-3, are done for the year.
Mets Win 9-5, move on to the NLCS against STL/SD
...nice...
Again, just another solid game. No one really stood out, because everyone played very very well...
Player Breakdowns::
Lo Duca::
He couldn't be happier, beating the team that traded him away...2-3, 2 rbi's...keep it up paulie! youre playing great baseball.
Delgado::
not his best work (game 1) but he played some solid defense as usual...i really think he is under-rated for his defensive abilities.
Valentin ::
Not Joses finest work...been in a bit of a slide lately, but an error free game is always good.
Reyes ::
Just another solid game, got picked off stealing 2nd, but hey...cant get 'em all..
Floyd::
I think we've seen the last of Cliff this postseason after tweaking his ankle rounding third in the 3rd...
he looked like he was in alot of pain...
Lastings anyone??
Beltran::
Great hitting game for Carlos, going 2-4, BB, RBI...i really couldn't ask for more...he got charged with an E for a bobble in the field...meh, nothing too bad.
Green::
He was pissed. He was very mad at the Dodgers, and took it out by going 3 for 5 with 2 RBI's. stay angry Shawn!
Pitchers:
Trachsel::
He pitched very well for the first 3 innings, but couldnt stay in long enough to prove himself...still shaky on him, but i guess he'll have to do.
Oliver::
3 hits, 3 ER...not good. came in a tight situation, couldnt hold. did turn a very pretty 1-5 DP.
Bradford::
Chad couldn't get it done, with a hit and a walk, and no outs...got pulled to go to the lefty...
Felicano::
Threw to 2 batters, 1 walk and an out. He also got the win. heh
Mota::
Threw 2 innings, surrendered 3 hits, but no runs.
Lights Out.
Heilman::
Gave up 2 hits, but passed the ball right along to Billy...well done.
Wagner::
Gave up his customary hit, but struck out 2. Country Time is solid. stay hot.
Bench:
Chavez::
Came in for Cliff in the top of the 4th. He will most likely be our LF for the rest of the year...1-3...keep up those defensive gems
Tucker::
Drew a PH walk, and scored the go ahead run...thats why youre on the team.
Woodward::
He made that 8th run. Hit a double, great tag up on Reyes flyball. scored on Paulies single...well done.
Franco::
I still cant believe you beat out that DP the other day...
...So thats the team that won 9-5 and swept the wild card Dodgers...
See you at Shea, against STL/SD!!
Lastings...pack your bags, youre coming with us...
Cliff Floyd just re-injured his achillies heel rounding third base in the 3rd inning...
...he looked like he was in alllllot of pain. he looks like he is done for the year...
...my guess is Lastings Milledge will be called up, if we move on to the NLCS...
Say What??
From CBS Sportsline Mets team report...
"--This is the Mets' fifth trip to the playoffs. They reached the World Series in each of the previous four."
...um...No.
did '88 and '99 get wiped from the record books?
...did those years just disappear?
i wouldnt mind that...but still...
someone should be fired for that too...
Nomar Questionable for Game 3
Nomar Garciaparra status for Game 3 is unknown.
Nomar left Game 2 in the 6th inning after aggrivating one of his two injuries (oblique and quad.)
...if you saw the game, you saw how gingerly he ran down to first when he grounded out to Valentin in the 6th, so im guessing it was more the quad then the oblique...
Mets up 2-0! so happy.
AP Recap.
Ohhh yesss...
what a solid solid game.
i had no doubts, and wasnt even close to nervous at the end.
Glavine pitched amazing. Just a solid game.
awesome awesome awesome...
this is the stuff you build on, and get on a roll.
i seriously thought Cliff's looong fly ball in the 4th was gone...long gone...
i thought it was gonna smash off that budwieser sign...stupid wind.
Im just soo happy right now. im ecstatic.
off to LA Trax vs. Maddux.
this should be super interesting.
and slow.
Was he watching the same game??
I'll start you off with a quote from Wallace Matthew's column...
"It took Willie Randolph 12 years to manage his first playoff game, and a little over two hours to nearly manage his team out of it.
In his first postseason game as a manager after 47 as a player, Randolph seemed as geeked up as any of his players. Vying for Micromanager of the Year, an award thought to have been retired around here with the departure of Bobby Valentine, Randolph yanked one pitcher too soon and stayed with another too long. He played it safe when he should have gambled, and gambled when he should have played it safe. Working with a shortage of quality starters for the playoff run, Randolph found a way to use half his staff in Game 1. Somehow, he managed to get outmanaged by Grady Little."
...im sorry, i dont think we were watching the same game...? i saw a manager pull a rookie pitcher in his first playoff start while he was still ahead of the game, to possibly be used in game 4 (or long relief of Wild Thing Perez)...
...i saw a manager rely on his bullpen, which has been oh-so-good this year...
...this is the same manager who would leave in pitchers too long at the beggining of the season, remember? but he has changed, learned, and he had to adapt quickly to this new situation with 2 starters out...
...im sorry sir, but you are dead wrong...what you saw was great managing, its too bad you missed it...
My goodness...Oliver Game 4?!
John Delcos reports that the Mets will go with Steve Trachsel for Game 3...and Oliver Perez Game 4...
...now this doesn't make alot of sense to me...i do not have alot of trust in Perez. i would rather pitcher John Maine on short rest. remember he only pitched 4 1/3 today...
...i would just feel allllot more comfertable with Maine at the helm instead of Wild Thing...
Some Humor found in the Disaster called El Duque's Calf...
a fairly funny story from Newsday
Hernandez laughed. "A Yankee would have had his MRI already," he joked.
...this actually brought a smile to my face, which is a must read for any mets fan right now...as we are all a mess...
El Duque in, Oliver Perez in!...Sorry Mike DiFelice...
MetsBlog is reporting that El Duque will not start today, but e will still be on the roster.
also...Oliver Perez will be on the roster...
wow! im in shock. "Wild Thing" Perez makes the postseason. he is gonna have to be a lefty specalist...maybe one or two batters...
i cant see anything more than that...
to make room for Perez, Mike DiFelice has been left off the roster, and now will be part of the "Taxi Squad"
Doubtful El Duque pitches Game 1
...im officially befuddled...
HotFoot::
"I was sprinting in the outfield," Hernandez told Newsday. "And I pulled my right calf. It's not a cramp."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mets Blog says its doubtful El Duque will pitch Game 1...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The only thing giving me hope right now is that if John Maine starts Game 1...the last time he was alerted to his start like this...he pitched the complete game shutout...
as i said before Maine is an exteremly calm guy, and i think he can handle all this "playoff pressure"...
Story on Reyes and Gwynn is nuts.
A great little story about "our motor," Jose Reyes...
"I'm just playing baseball," Reyes says. "I'm just trying to get on base and score runs. And if people think what I do is exciting, that's nice. I'm not trying to be."
Jose Reyes doesn't need to try.
He just is.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
and on Tony Gwynn's "Scorecard" of the series breakdown he give the bullpen edge to...the Dodgers?
...i dont think so...
He puts the edge with the Dodgers for Pitching and Bullpen. and the Mets get the edge in offense, defense, manager, and intagibles...
"Mets in four."

No Maddux v. Glavine
According to Matthew Cerrone @ Mets Blog the dodgers will opt to pitch Hong-Chih Kuo in game 2 instead of Greg Maddux.
...Maddux will be their game 3 starter at home.
So thats a Tom Glavine vs. Hong-Chih Kuo...
and...
Steve Trachsel?? vs. Greg Maddux...
...im going to miss the Glav/Maddux matchup.
Hopefully Kuo (Lefty) doesnt kill us like all the lefties have been doing lately and waste a playoff start from Glav...

'The Wright Flight'
this is an odd one...
So Delta Airlines has nicknamed one of its planes "The Wright Flight" after 3B David Wright...
ok...?
"This is our way of congratulating the team, by dedicating one of our aircraft to its All-Star third baseman," said Tim Mapes, managing director of marketing for Delta.
It will have the number 5 and David's signature near the door, so everyone boarding will be able to know they are taking "The Wright Flight"...

Position and Pitching Breakdown
Tom Singer does a nice breakdown onf the position players and the pitching...
Heres how i see it...
Catcher -- Mets
Lo Duca has Russel Martin beat. Sure Paul's never seen the postseason but either has Martin. Lo Duca is the grizzled vet with the dream in sight...he'll fight harder than anyone out there...
First Base -- Mets
Nomar was the comeback story of the first half, and has only come on recently. Delgado hasnt seen the posteason yet, but his big bat has been hot. Carlos wins this one.
Second -- Dodgers
Stupid Jeff Kent. Hes been at 2nd base longer. They have similar stats, with Kent having a better average, Valentin is clutch...he's already a cult hero in NY...but i have to give this one to LA
Third -- Mets
Wilson Betimit is no match for David Wright. Wright is so hungry for a ring...i dont think Betimit's speed can match up to the power of Wright.
SS -- Draw
Furcal and Reyes seem pretty similar to me...Furcal is a bit more stable, but Reyes is a wildcard...you never know what Jose will do
Left Field -- Dodgers
Ethier may beat Floyd (who will probably start 1&2) Chavez is another wildcard...he can pop one off you, made great plays in the field and so on...Ethier does not beat Chavez...but overall...Dodgers have the advantage...
Center Field -- Mets
Carlos Beltran is hurting a bit (he says he's at 80%) but thats still better than 100% of Kenny Lofton. Sure theyre different hitters...but overall Beltrans a much better hitter...and could be the new Mr. October (remember '04?)
Right -- Draw
JD Drew vs. Shawn Green...theyre very similar players, hitters, fielders...I might have to give it to Drew just because his hat stays on more...
Bullpen -- Mets
This was easy...without Gagne theyre not scary at all...
and we have one if, if not the best pen in the mlb.
Easy one for the Mets.
Bench -- Dodgers
Lugo, Kemp, Hall and ex-met-bench-phenom Marlon Anderson beat out "Ice Cold" Woodward, "Old Man" Franco, "Journeyman" Tucker, "Speedy" Chavez and maybe "The Rook" Milledge.
Pitching -- Draw
You never know with pitching...
El Duque is always good, and Glav has started more postseason games than almost anyone. The Dodgers have a more set rotation but will be missing Penny.
Manager -- Mets
Willie has learned. He knows when to pull pitchers now...he is def. a different manager from the start of this year.
Intangibles? -- Mets
There is so much going on in NY. the guys on this team are mostly friends, been through alot, and are HUNGRY!
LA just barely squeaked in...they dont look as hungry.
The Final Tally
Mets -- 7
Dodgers -- 3
Draw -- 3

Draw -- 3

Pedro done for this year.
Pedro done for year.
Pedro Martinez has a tear in his LEFT calf...he will be out 4-6 weeks (done for the year)
yes...his left calf, not the one that has been giving him all the trouble.
so mr John Maine...welcome to the postseason starting job!
...i like maine, sure hes never pitched the postseason...but hes a calm and collected guy so i dont think that the playoff pressure will really get to him...

Slump??
i hate to say it...but are we in a slump?
i mean, i know we're resting some players, and taking it a bit easy before the playoffs...but...am i the only one a little scared??
our last ten games we are 3-7.
in the last 12 games weve scored 35 runs to our opponents 47. that doesnt seem like a huge difference but compared to how were used to winning games. and how our offense has looked most of the year..now is not the time to "slump"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
so if the season ended today, we would be playing the Dodgers.
but...who knows who is going to make the playoffs as the Card's are falling apart.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
and a great article on SI.com from Pete McEntegart on the top10 reasons he hates the yankees.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So Pedro goes tonightsort of with the playoff game 1 starter on the line.
it all depends how he feels
El Duque would probably pitch game 1 if Pedro cant go
7:35. ATL.
RE-PAINT THE APPLE!
i think its about time.
it needs to be done.
its way overdue.
Its about time we repainted the "Home Run" Apple. to be honest, it looks like s**t right now. So this is my official declaration to the Shea front office, either paint it, or get a spankin' new one. the apple is a tradition and it needs to be spruced up. its all dinged up and rotting out. i hope the apple finds its way into new "shebbets field" but at least for now, give it a couple coats of paint and call it a day. We have the playoffs coming up!
NATIONAL TV!
PRIMETIME BABY!!!
Give Mr. Met a paintbrush and send him out to centerfield.
the dumbest thing ive heard all day.
Zero chance.
thats what Joe Giradi's chances are of returning to the Marlins next year.
how stupid can you be?!
werent they like 20+ games under .500
theyre now 76-77. 4 games out of the wildcard.
all with a payroll of $15 mil.
this is the best part...
" The Marlins already have identified possible replacements for Girardi, the report said, including a trio of third base coaches: Fredi Gonzalez (ATL), Joey Cora (CWS) and Manny Acta (NYM)."
you can have him..chances
The First Semi-investigative Reporting This Site Has Ever Done.
You win some, you lose some...
on a night where the Mets lose to the Pirates and Pedro only goes 3 innings and almost cries.
and the Phillies win, so the number stays at 1.
...this site gets the crack of it short life....
Remember Ryan Leli? this kid?!?!
The one that snuck into Shea's Visiting Clubhouse to talk to Mike Piazza...
well i met him!
By sheer luck, on a night of poker with the guys, one of my friends roommates brings in a friend who is staying the weekend.
Im wearing my black Mets shirt with the #15 and my kick ass Mets Plastic Helmet.
The kid goes "Hey! you guys mets fans?"
Me and my good friend Jamie, who is also wearing a Beltran shirt (we did not plan that) of course answer "Yep"
He says "Well, then you probably know me...I'm the kid that snuck into Shea with the fake media pass..."
At this point, Jamie and I look at each other, in shock...and awe.
This kid is my hero!
First off he has the balls to do all this...a fake press pass, sneak into the stadium, watch the game, go into the visiting clubhouse, go to the post game manager press conference, and attempt a picture with Mike Piazza.
He said this was all pretty much for a picture with Mike. Apparently its a unwritten rule that the press wont ask for personal pictures. Well, at the end of the night, as Piazza was leaving, this kid asks for a picture. Piazza, being a great guy, obliges, and throws his arm around him. Right before a press guy, who was being nice and taking a picture, could get the shot off, a Equipment Manager for the Padres jumped in and said no pictures in the clubhouse. He was outraged that someone from the media would try to take a picture. He took the kids fake credentials and gave them to security.
Bummer.
This kid was living the dream for a night. He got to see things us fans only dream of. He almost had the shot with Mikey Piazza...and it all came apart becuase of an equipment manager...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was pure chance that i met him, and he was a really cool kid. He just seemed to take this all as just another little story, something that could happen any day and he just shrug it off.
Lucky.

Down to 2
Wow.
I guess the marlins just kinda give up when their starting pitcher leaves.
this was just crazy.
so philly won both yesterday.
so were down to two games.
best scenario is this...
Philly loses tonight to ATL.
which would put the Magic Number @ 1.
which would leave it up to Petey and the mets to put it away @ Pitt.
(the phillies play in houston so they will most likely end later.)
Too bad X-man cant join in the fun...maybe we can sneak him over to the visiting clubhouse somehow...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
this piece on Gomez, on MetsBlog first shocks me...then makes me feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside. and then i drool a little.
Faster than Reyes?!?!?! wow.
just wow.
Go Atlanta.
Go Petey.
Go Mets.
Buh-Bye Braves.
with the win last night...a good win too...the Braves were mathematically eliminated from the NL East Title.
ohhhhhhhhh...you feel that? its feels goooooooooood!!
on a verrrry rainy night-
Mr. Wild Thing Perez struck out 11 through 6. 6 innings took him 101 pitches. whew.
We were down 4-0 going into the top of the 7th.
Wright doubled in delgado, but Taylor Tankersley somehow got himself out of the inning.
He got a little help from a reyes swinging strike instead of a HBP. stupid call.
But the top of the 8th was classic mets this year.
the 3-run bomb from delgado to straight away center. right then, i knew we had it.
a Floyd double brought in Wright (who also doubled.)
Heilman did his thing.
We got another run in the 9th.
And Wagner went up against Cabrera with two on...and struck him out.
So Atlanta, how does it feel?
The Magic Number is down to 3!
and this is kinda ironic...if Atlanta sweeps the phillies in thier double header today, and the mets beat the fish. its ours..ours!!
i never thought id say this..."Go Atlanta."
...i think i can hear Chipper crying...
yikes. lets not talk about it.
let me put it simply.
20 hits for the marlins.
Dave Williams magic disappeared.
just wow.
the magic number is down to 4!
Division Leaders? Didn't look like it...
Brad Penny vs. Tom Glavine...you were expecting some sort of pitchers duel? well i was.
and i couldnt have been more wrong.
Glavine started shaky...but doesnt he always? gave up back to back singles to lugo and nomar...but he got out of it.
and for the mets...again...it started in the first. 4 hits in a row to start the game.
a base runner mistake by Lo Duca did cost us a run...but Beltran and Wright picked up RBI's
2-0 mets...122 first inning runs.
glavine went 1-2-3 in the second and third
and in the second Valentin crushed...CRUSHED a ball to delgado/mo vaughn territory...off the scoredboard. right above the HIP sign.
3-0 mets.
top o the 4th..where glav fell apart last time out...and it looked like he'd lose it again.
with two outs he gave up a double and then hit ethier with a pitch.
but then he got Mr. "I like running into walls and misplaying balls" (ILRIWAMB for short) Matt Kemp to ground out to glav. who looked like a gold glover making a nice play on this jam shot from kemp and a nice reaction play snagging a ball lined right back at him.
the most exciting part came in the bot of the 6th.
Walk to d.Wright. Double from Green.
Valentin hit into FC...to kent...kent threw home to try to get Wright, who was running on contact, good throw but the catcher could hang on...and wright scored, and green moved to third.
Glav laid down his sac bunt...
so 2nd and 3rd...2 out...
Jose Reyes smacks a ball high and far to left center...kemp going back...back...back...whoops misses the ball...hits the wall...and the ball rolls back into center field...
Jose goes all the way. INSIDE THE PARK HOME RUN! whoo all in 14.81 seconds too.
that boy can fly.
Glavine got into trouble in the 7th.
Mota came in and walked 1 (first walk of the game for the mets) but got out of it.
Bert and Heilman gave up a single each but closed out the game.
Final 7-0.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So if this is someone were gonna face in the playoffs...boy am i happy.
if we can do this against the All-Star Starter...i couldnt be happier.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As Keith, Gary and Ron were tlaking about during the game...i think Bert Hernandez in the man on the bubble, because theyre going to have to take maine into the playoffs, which would bump a short reliever off the roster.
The way Mota has been so lights out would have to point to Bert getting the bump.
sorry bert.
Game 3::well we cant win them all...O-Perez got rocked. loss 8-4
oh yeah! this team freakin rocks!
I almost forgot these guys were capable of this kinda stuff.
It was 7-1...then it was 7-5 after a mighty slam from C-del, then it was 7-6 after a great play from ronnie belliard which got jose reyes at first, but the run still scored.
Then in the 9th, right after Paulie couldve went for a inside the parker if that ball just skipped a little higher.
Mr. Gary Cohen saw the future.
"So one out and one on, here comes Beltran, and one swing can win it for New York..."
and BANG! there is goes, just to the right of Azek Trimboard's K Sign...
and it was no longer Albert's Show...And Carlos Delgado became the opening act for Mr. Carlos Beltran. That 2-run game winning home run just felt magical to me. I knew it was ours when Lo Duca singled. i just felt it. thats the team we have this year.
like Jimmy V said "Never Give Up, Don't Ever Give Up."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Jew In Flushing.
We got Shawn Green.
'Zona is paying $6.3 mil.
gave up Evan Maclane who recently threw a 5-hit shutout. but hey...i like it.
Were also going after Moises Alou. (yuck)
He's 40, in his walk year, and prone to injury.
sure hes having a better year offensively...but he has 200 less AB's and has missed/will miss the next week with a leg problem.
oh. and he pee's on his hands.
so no thanks.

holy crap theres alot of recap.
Tom Glavine...ayyy! Feeling coldness in his hand/shoulder. He has had Reynauds Phenomenon since 1991. Is it a blood clot? We don't know. Its not a aneurysm.
NEWS:: The Post (ugh) says he's good to go...
Pedro is on the DL with a strained right calf. Eligible to come off DL Wed.
Castro and Valentin...both looking to come back on Tuesday.
After the near horrendous sweep by the phils. the metties recovered in the final game, and then went on to sweep the Rockies at home...
Mets got Mota. (he's a Oliver Perez-type work in progress...)
The '86 reunion was beautiful. So is Metstradamus's recap...
Bannister and Perez both pitched very good games in AAA. Perez had a no hitter thru 6. (2 WP's and a HBP to go along) And Bannister 6IP, 1 run, 6 hits, 1 walk, 5 Ks.
(so we have options...heh)
Tonight 7:10 SNY Weaver vs. Maine.

Trade Recap
Trade Recap:: Here
We still dont know if D. Sanchez will be able to pitch again this year. The swelling need to go down before they can make that decision. If he doesnt need surgery, he may be able to pitch again in September.
Minaya said he did have to overpay to get Bert Hernandez back, and Oliver Perez. But we needed another setup man, and we all know how Roberto can pitch.

"Still, the Mets engaged in weekend dialogue with the Pirates, with ex-Met reliever Roberto Hernandez and Wells the two most obtainable options from Pittsburgh. Chips that have been mentioned in that type of deal include Heath Bell, Anderson Hernandez and hard-throwing Double-A reliever Matt Lindstrom." --Daily News.

zito seems to be staying put.
Livan is still in talks.
...i would welcome schmidt. hes always been fairly good. but for who..?
i could give up heilman for him. we could easily give up 3b or SS prospects as we look set there for a while...but thats just me.

im kinda in shock
we swept the braves IN hot-lanta. wow.
theyre 15 out. were 14 up on philly. biggest lead of the season.
beltran tied the ML record with 3 Grand Slams in a calender month.
delgado went 4-5 with that "painful bruise"
19 hits.
glavine only went 4 giving up 6 runs. ayyyy
i really dont want to be greedy and ask for any more from this team.
==Yanks/Phils pulled off the biggest trade...Sending Abreu and Lidle to bronx for 4 minor leaguers...==
lets beat those fish.

Game:: Mets 6 -- Braves 4
Welcome back Mr. Martinez.
After a shaky first...giving up four runs...he settled down and retired 12 straight after C. Jones' lead off double in the third.
Through the first 3 innings he gave up 5 hits, 2 walks and 4 runs. Innings 3 (after the double) thru 6 he gave up 0 hits and struck out 2.
Final Line: 6 IP, 5 Hits, 2 BB, 2 K, 4 ER. not GREAT. but you cant tell how he pitched from the box score.
Feliciano/Sanchez/Wagner combined for 9 outs. with sanchez giving up a walk to bettiment and the K-ing A. Jones to end the 8th in a big spot.
Reyes and Wright hit solo shots. Beltran hit a 2RBI single and Valentin added a sac fly.
Great game today ('cept for the 1st...)

ARGH! :: Cubs 8 -- Mets 7
we gave up the runs early. tried to battle back, and fell just short.
Maddux is like the pitching version of chipper jones at shea. 14 wins in 30 starts at shea.
We will now operate in a six man rotation. Pedro will be returning on Friday to pitch against Atlanta.
Nice play by Lo Duca in the 8th to throw out a speedy Pierre.
Fun game...too bad we couldnt pull that one out.
Trades: The Heilman for Gil Meche rumor apparently is asolutely nothing. its a "non rumor."
Glavine v. Zambrano 7:10
trying to avoid a 3 game skid.

No Sweep.: Astros 8 - Mets 4
well he beat us.
stupid tractor.
C-Del is hopefully breaking that slump going 2-2 with a 3-run HR and 2 walks.
Pelfrey still looks like a rookie out there. He has a bit o' trouble in those pressure spots with men on base. hes used to K after K after K. He looked like a guy just called up from AA. maybe it was the home crowd...wanting that 3rd win and the sweep...
"Who is going to be the odd-man-out when Pedro comes back..?" That had to have been going through his head.
well. 2 out of 3 aint bad says Meatloaf. next up Maddux and the Cubs.
oh. and Guy Conti (bullpen coach) underwent angioplasty to relieve (no pun intended!) a clogged artery. should be back with the team monday. were with you guy.

Game:: Mets 4 -- Astros 3
Preorder your Meatloaf and Joe Buck duet tape out soon!
but seriously...
El Duque gave up a 2-run HR to Lance Berkman, and a solo shot to Preston Wilson. and then promptly closed the door from there on.
C-Del hit a sac fly, scoring Valentin in the bot of the first.
and mr Xavier Nady hit a 3 run home run in the 4th inning.
the line on Hernandez 7 IP, 4 hits, 3 ER, 2 BB, and 8 K's. not too shabby.
Duaner pitched the 8th and Wagner saved it in the 9th.
not much to say. great pitching from el duque, after a shaky first. retired 9 (?) in a row.
~21 games over .500~
"I've made a revelation, A-Rod is responsible for global warming." --that guy who isnt Joe Buck.

The rain for Maine falls mainly during Gary Cohen jokes...
wow...
Mets win 7-0, led by a surprise starter, Mr. John Maine.
He pitched a complete game, 4 hit shut-out. And pitched so well, apparently we dont need to trade.
He only needed 98 pitches to get it done.
Maine does have to buy steak dinners for Floyd, Beltran and Lo Duca for keeping the shutout intact in the 4th and 8th.
~Floyd went up and over the wall to bring back a possible Chris Burke homerun.
~Beltran made a fantastic throw that bounced off the pitchers mound (through Delgados legs) right to Lo Duca, who promptly tagged out Munson tagging from third.
oh yeah...and Valentin hit a Grand Slam in the second, Delgado hit a 2 run blast in the 5th, and also a sac fly in the third.
C-Del went 1-2, BB, 2 runs scored, and 3 RBI.
would the real carlos delgado please stand up? and stick around...
just a solid game ALLL around. hopefully this is the real John Maine as well. and this continues!

Game:: Mets 4 - Reds 2 (10)
Scored early...2 solo shots. Got shut down by Arroyo from there...
Glav great early allowed 2 in the 5th. struggled thru the 6th...miraculously got out without any runs..thanks to heads up throw home play by Valentin.
Chad (Houdini) Bradford worked out of a bases loaded 1 out jam in the 7th. Hes been so solid.
A great throw out at second with Valentin sliding away and yet still blocking the plate.
anyway. Finished the trip 4-2 heading home to face houston and chicago.

Game:: Stupid Rain
it hurts to think about what would happen if that rain didnt come.
Traxx was going on all cylinders, picking off his early baserunner. mets got 2rbi hits from reyes and wright in those 2 innings pre rain.
and then...the rain. 2 hours and 23 minutes where i was reminded of Tsuyoshi Shinjo.
i forgot he wore #5...
anyway. props to SNY for the OBP stat now in each players batting graphic. i think that stat is just as important as the AVG.
yeah. i guess im sort of speechless on this game. we just collapsed after the 2nd inning.
~Pedro aiming to return in 10 days.
~Traded Keppinger for Gotay...straight minor league deal. 1-1.
Arroyo vs. Glav 12:30 today. toughhh game.

Doubly Grand
Carlos Beltran haters, please shut up.
I would have to say he's earning his money now.
A Grand Salami 2 games in a row. (first met since Robin Ventura in a double header against the Brewers, 1999)
Takes over the RBI lead. 27 HRs.
Hit that GS in the 7th to extend the lead from one run to 5. Added an RBI double in the 9th.
And what about Xavier Nady...solo shot in the 3rd. Guns down Royce Clayton trying to stretch that RBI single to a double in the 6th, got out of a possible disaster inning.
And we cant forget about Mike Pelfrey. Pitched "OK" getting into trouble over and over, but his sinker was working excellent, and he induced double plays to end the inning in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th. Two of those DP's came off Griffey Jr's bat. He went 6 giving up 7 hits, 3 BB, and struck out 3.
Its good to have Reyes back. He went 0-4 with a walk and a FC, but scored 2 runs. He also forced Delgado to come off the bag twice with errant throws to first. But delgado still managed to get them out, and even joked about where his arm angle should be when throwing.
~Delgado is 5 for his last 33. in a major slump. thank god everyone else keeps hitting. Once were running on all pistons...ohh boy
~Cliff Floyd was finally quited going 0-4 on the day.
~Jose Valentin hit a solo HR in the 5th, extending his hitting streak to 6.
~Pedro is eating normal again.
== 7:10 tonight Traxx vs. Harang.

the return.
New York Mets baseball starts again. 2:20 @ historic Wrigley against the lowly Cubs.
~Traxx vs Maddux. interesting!
~Reyes will sit again today, still nursing his pinky.
~Maine will be shipped into the pen, and Pelfrey will make at least one more start.
~Pedro returning will be pushed back, after he came down with food poisoning, and couldnt throw over the ASB.
Trade Rumors have begun to pick up. Nats and Reds swapped 8 players, with Gary Majewski going to Cincy and Austin Kearns to Washington.
The lastest involving the mets, is dealing with the White Sox. Javier Vazquez and Freddy Garcia are available. They both have ERA's hovering around 5, maybe Rick "The Jacket" Peterson could tweak 'em a little...? It looks like we'd have to part with Sanchez or Heilman...
~I don't know how i feel on this one. Freddy had that great year a few years ago, and im sure hed do well with the mets, but do we really want to tinker with our 'pen...
well...Lets see how today goes. Lets Go Mets!

thank god for david wright.
comeback baby!
glavines win streak battles through, avoiding a loss for the third straight game.
Xavier Nady hit a two run shot, and made 2 solid plays in the field.
Lo Duca went 3 for 4 with an RBI.
But the game ball goes to David Wright for his 3 run, go ahead, eventual game winning home run in the bottom of the 8th.
Wagner gave up a solo shot, but still earned the save, as the mets earned a split with the marlins heading into the all-star break.
good luck to our all stars, and especially to david wright in the home run derby tommorrow night.
that is a great first half of the season...lets do it again.

what a day(game) and night
ok...the mets lost to the marlins 3-2 in game 1. they couldnt buy a hit, both their runs were unearned and scored without a hit. again, john maine pitched fairly well. 6 hits, 3 k's, 0 walks...except 3 of those hits were solo homeruns.
in the second game...we crushed them 17-3. mike pelfrey was a bit shaky, visably nervous at times. he threw 5 innings, 104 pitches, gave up 5 hits, walked 4 and struck out 3. pretty good.
and he got all the run support he needed from jose valentin. grand slam and a 3 run triple in the first and second respectively. every starter except franco and pelfrey had a hit.
john maine must be thinking...'why couldnt i get just two of those runs...'
glavine goes today. cmon we need a split here...
oh. and david wright's socks in game 1 at least. niiice. thats how all ball players should wear their pants...i cant find a picture though.

ok...lets take a minute to recap.
Double Header today- John Maine to pitch game 1, Mike Pelfrey (pictured right) to pitch game 2.
Henry Owens made his major league debut in the opener against florida. he pitched a perfect 9th inning, and got a standing ovation as he left the mound.
this is very exciting. all our young pitchers....ohhh
Jose Reyes will miss the rest of the series against Florida, and possibly the All Star game, after he was spiked on the hand during a head first slide into 1st base. I still don't get the head first slide, it seems to me that if you keep running, youll get there sooner...right? leaving your feet a couple steps early, and flinging yourself through the air doesnt seem like the fastest way to get from point A to point B.
Lima Time has expired. He was designated for assignment...finally. His Mets numbers:: 0-4 9.78 ERA. woah.
ok...thats most of what happened. lets go maine and pelfrey. lets go Mets.
oh yeah. i hope the games go well...considering i cant watch them...gosh, i hope i dont miss anything special.

Ohhh EFF! the clock has struck Lima Time
lima. met. again.
heath bell is the odd man out, being sent down to norfolk. again.
i dont know why they think this man is a problem solver. Sure, he looks like a clown, and acts like one, but he sure as hell cant pitch. lets see where this mistake takes us.
WE WANT PELFRY! (clap clap clapclapclap) WE WANT OWENS! (clap clap clapclapclap) WE WANT RING! (clap clap clapclapclap)

Game: Mets 7 - Pirates 6...hallelujah!
FINALLY!!!
shaky game from glav. 2 come from behinds. hopefully this kick starts us.
2 absolutely solid innings from the offense...something that has been in hiding of recent.
A few notes:: Reyes goes 3-5, 2 SB, gets back to .300. Nady a BIG day 3-4, 3 RBIs (including the gamewinner) He actually got a hit with RISP! and of course...a big congrats to Billy Wagner for his 300th save!!
Great slide by Endy in the 8th for the go-ahead. just got your foot in there in time...nice.
Feel Better Cliff! Floyd had to leave in the fifth, with a mild concussion, after crashing into jose reyes on a fly ball. I dont know what the problem was, i assume after the night game, when cliff had to come rushing in to make a very nice catch, he wasnt going to take any chances and came in hard on this ball. Cliff just cant seem to get healthy and stay healthy...hopefully he'll be back after the break.

News: Lima Time...?
ohhhhh boy. Daily News is reporting Jose Lima will rejoin the mets...No word on the moves made to get him here, or if he'll be starting or in the bullpen.
From the same article...an update on Brian Bannister. In an Email to the Daily News, he says he partially tore his hamstring, near the siatic nerve. He said hes nearly at 100% and will begin rehab and simulated games soon.
hurry. we need you.

Lets just call this a slump.
Pirates 11 - Mets 1...
what else is there to say. This was the single most god awful game ive seen in a long time. (besides that texas collapse against the yanks) I have so much to say...all these witty one-liners. but i shall refrain.
Dear Willie,
Please, when you think...'hmm maybe i should take out my pitcher...nah ill give him a few more batters' hit yourself in the head with pedro's wiffle bat. over and over.
sincerely,
the entire mets fan community.
today glavine again looks to right the ship. and hopefully he can.
godspeed tommy, youre gonna need it.
oh and to everyone that called into WFAN before the game saying willie threw the yankee game.
shut up.

Mets lose by 9...ouch
Paging Dr. Rick Peterson...Dr. Peterson...'i think your patient is dead.'
...even 'the jacket' can't seem to fix soler. after the disaster in the bronx on sunday, i think its about time to close the books on mr. soler.
as the awfully witty commentators on ESPN were remarking on how he was afraid of contact...he just kept throwing low and outside, high, inside...anywhere but the plate...
HEY! you have 4 (cuatro) starting All Stars out there behind you...(well three...ones kinda in front of the pitcher) you can let the ball be hit...NOT to where E-Rod put his, but on the ground is ok!
tonight was an all around disaster. we put up 7...and lost by 9. ouch!
lets shake this off with pedro against those swashbuckling pirates.
oh wait. now pedro is hurt...
bring on mr. darren oliver.

Daily News: Pelfry May Get Chance
Even his trusty wiffle bat cant save him from this.
According to the Daily News:: Pedro will most likely be taking off until after the all star break, which I assume means they will put him on the DL to make room for Mike Pelfry. Looks like Pelfry may get the start in one of the games of the doubleheader Saturday.
Darren Oliver looks like he will get the start today against Pitt. Wow...of the 4 Mets games I've seen this year the pitchers have been...John Maine vs. Washington (loss), Victor Zambrano/Darren Oliver vs. Atlanta (win), El Duque in the Bronx (loss), and again Oliver vs. Pitt. (hopefully a win)
I must have good pitcher karma or something.
